Among the many ways of studying for an exam, using flashcards is one of the most efficient, if not the best way to memorize information. Rather than looking through countless notes or through a thick book for specific details, you can just look over a card's side for a question, think about it, then flip the card to see if your answer is correct. This is what you can do with Anki. It gives you the possibility of creating flashcards, without any effort. Due to its flexible functionality, you may create flashcards for mostly any subject.

The application allows you to work with multiple card decks, so you won't mix cards from different subjects. Decks are listed on a compact user interface and creating them does not involve anything more than clicking a button and typing a name. Once a deck is created, you can select it and hit an option to start adding cards. Despite its simple appearance, the card editing menu comes with many useful options. You can simply type a question and an answer in different input fields, but you can also insert images, LaTeX equations, HTML code, record sounds and more. The elements you insert in each input field will be displayed on different sides of the same card. When you are done editing, you may hit a button to add the card to the database, after which everything on the editing window will be cleared, so you can start editing a new card.

When you select a card deck, the application will display the number of newly added cards, the total number of learning materials and the number of items that need to be reviewed, along with an option for beginning a studying session. The cards themselves are displayed on the same interface and you may click a button to flip them, to reveal the answer. After flipping a card, you can choose one of three options, based on how fast you have figured out the answer. Depending on the selected option, the application won't show the card for one or more days or it will show it again in future studying sessions, if you feel that you still have to study its question.

By default, the application allows you to study individual card decks according to a schedule, but you can set up custom studying sessions. You can increase the limit of new cards or review cards and make other fine tweaks. Also, Anki provides detailed statistics and graphs, regarding how much you have learned. Another useful feature is the possibility of synchronizing the created card decks with an online account, to make them available on other machines.

Pros

Creating flash cards can be done as easily as possible. The application will show specific cards in the future, depending on how you mark them. It also provides detailed statistics and it allows you to synchronize your card decks with other machines.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. If you need to study for an upcoming exam, Anki will help you prepare yourself in a fast, simple and efficient manner.
